Programme One

The first LSE Global Pensions Programme was based in Madrid. It introduced pension systems, their principles and basic concepts and their historic evolution before presenting different aspects of the assets of pension funds such as portfolio theory, asset valuation and performance measurement.

The programme followed with the analysis of the lessons learned from economic theory and the implications of pension design theory. It concluded with a workshop on pension management in Spain and Latin America and its financial risks.

Programme Two

The second programme, held in Miami, opened with a global vision of the world economy before examining the objectives of pension systems and how they are implemented within political systems.

The topics of savings and accumulation processes, and decumulation processes and perception of benefits were introduced. In addition, the programme focused on the social security reforms in Latin America over the past thirty years and the following pensions re-reforms adopted by some countries within the region.

Next, the principles of the corporate governance of the pension funds and their administrations were analysed and correct development guidelines were provided. The Vice President of FIAP, Mr Santiago Montenegro, ended the programme with a roundtable and a final talk on the challenges retirement poses to pension systems.

Programme Three

The third programme, in Cancun, provided a global perspective on pension systems, regulatory systems, investment strategies and asset management methods. It included speakers’ experiences of how to invest and manage a macro pension fund, covering politics, risk levels, control systems and investment options.

New areas included long-term investments and the proper allocation of assets to the pension funds timeline. The latest research on longevity risks and the assurance of risk distribution, and topics on pension coverage in Latin America and ways to improve were presented.

The programme concluded with a comparative analysis of social security systems in different countries, highlighting elements leading to low coverage.
